Frederick Banting was an Ontario physician who, working with Charles Best at the University of Toronto, discovered insulin in 1921. Before insulin, a diabetes diagnosis was a death sentence. Banting sold the patent for $1 so the discovery would be available to everyone.
Banting's discovery has saved hundreds of millions of lives. His decision to sell the patent for $1 — ensuring insulin would be affordable — is one of the most selfless acts in the history of medicine, and a reflection of Canadian values.
Geneticist and broadcaster who has spent 50 years raising awareness about the environment.
